Levi Watkins Learning Center: Has the Pandemic Shifted the Culture?

Alabama State University has maintained its hybrid learning for another semester but what about the on-campus facilities. The university’s library is open, with fewer hours, and not nearly as vibrant as before.

Starbucks iCafe: Still Taking Orders Despite Fewer Customers

The Levi Watkins Learning Center, the on-campus library, has its own cafe that serves drinks, snacks, and sometimes gum. Starbucks is served in the cafe; shown above, the grande caramel frappuccino with whipped cream and extra caramel drizzle.

3rd Floor of the Library: Plenty of Books With No One to Read Them

The large windows, that display Alabama State University’s campus, provide excellent natural lighting. As you can see, the chairs in this area are vacant; students are not utilizing the books either.

Staff Offices: Desert and Disregarded

Inside the Levi Watkins Learning Center, there are several offices for the staff. The pandemic has impacted staff just as much as the students; this desk is vacant along with the common area outside the window. Perhaps the staff has gone away to lunch, or they are utilizing the virtual route.

Shhh: No One Makes a Sound in the Quiet Zone

There are five floors in the library and the 4th floor is the “quiet zone,” which is meant for students to read. On this side of the 4th floor, the tables have been rearranged to accommodate CDC standards; social distancing by staying six feet apart. The “quiet area” is literally quiet because there are no students.

Study Room: More Privacy, Fewer Bodies

Several floors of the library have study rooms that students can use to get more privacy and focus on schoolwork. Once again, there are large spacious windows that provide a view of the campus. This “individual study room” is vacant yet the view is still beautiful.

Water Fountain: Vacant Similarly to the Cafe

The cafe, located on the first floor of the Levi Watkins Learning Center, has an outdoor water fountain. As you can see, the fountain is dry and lacks people too. Students are encouraged not to congregate which leaves plenty of open seats; hopefully business is still booming.
The cafe, located on the left side of the Levi Watkins Learning Center, has a modern design. There’s a large television, chairs, tables, and an outdoor waterfall; that is currently dried out. Though the cafe is not busy, students still utilize the lounge chairs and enjoy their food.
